How it all began
Founded in February1999, Tornadoes Rugby has been a dominant presence in the internal league at UCT winning 7 titles in their 11 year history and has become one of Cape Town’s favorite sons!
www.nadoes.com is a tribute to all past and current Tornadoes who have made the team the success that it is today.
How it all began:
There are many ideas and theories about how the Tornadoes came about, but here is the truth and a story that you can tell your grandchildren one day when they run out and play for the mighty Tornadoes.
In the late summer of ’99 a couple of UCT students and RBHS old boys from E 95 were heading for another year at UCT and a winter with very little to do. They had heard about the UCT Internal League the previous year and with a little research managed to get hold of a team application form for the upcoming season in 1999.
A few close friends were called into the act to form a team, plan and prepare for the season. Informal meetings were scheduled at Wayside Road and the infamous 36 Keurboom Road. Many names were thrown in the hat and after many a beer and a trip through the green door eventually the ‘Tornadoes’ was collaboratively decided as the teams name. Alfie “Potman” Tinker out of nowhere came up with the famous words UCHA CHA which goes hand in hand with the team name. The meaning of Ucha cha resembles all things great and beautiful surrounding the game of Rugby and the core values of the Tornadoes.
The Jerseys were ordered from Mikes Sports on Main Road, Salt River. The jerseys did not arrive until our 3rd game of the season and the Tornadoes played in Rondebosch jerseys. The jerseys arrived but in the wrong colors but we stuck with it and the colors were simply meant to be. Our entrance fee and jerseys were paid for by a pre-season raffle (prize: a case of Wellingtons Brandy). Someone’s Gran won the prize and the Brandy was consumed throughout the season.
Not sure if we really need this? “Matt ‘Phil Skutter’ Ibbotson came up with the original Nadoes logo which has recently been replaced with one that is equally unique and special.”
The final game of 1999 was an absolute cracker. The Nadoes came from 2 scores down to level the game. We kicked a penalty and Simon ‘Glen Mcgrath’ Voigt did chip, collect and round Rudy Kyle to bring us within 2 points, the conversion went over and we went to extra time (Golden Try) in front of a crowd of 500 people. The Tornadoes crossed the line within 2 minutes of the kick-off and the Tornadoes were champions and a legacy was born.
The Tornadoes 2000 season was a tough one and the mighty Tornadoes battled to keep the momentum from the previous season but thanks to the efforts of Stuart ‘Scotsman’ Mcconnachie and a few others the legacy would continue.
2001 the Tornadoes were back to their best and won their second title….

Discussion Forum
The last feature to be added. Once everything is running smoothly we plan to have a section so that everybody can chat and add comments. Yeah, all this shouldnt take to long because its been created already and the joys of PHP allows as to just add on cool modules.
Site Funding
Jeez, we are going to try our best to keep the site live and operational for as long as possible. At the moment the players are funding it all, which is obvioulsy not ideal. If you know of anyone who would like to add some sponsors to the main page, for a minimal fee, that would be shweet. It will only cost less than a grand a year to keep it live for an entire year, including the domain (nadoes.com) renewal. So lets hope some funding comes through some day, contact Jason if you have some ideas.
