Wilkinsons Return

“He’s fine and we hope to get him into the game at some stage,” Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Rob Andrew said.

Wilkinson took part in full-contact training with Newcastle on Wednesday.

Wilkinson’s injury kept him out of England’s three autumn internationals, when he was replaced by Charlie Hodgson and the captaincy went to full-back Jason Robinson.

The 25-year-old has not played for his country since the 2003 World Cup final – where his drop goal in the dying seconds of injury-time clinched the trophy in a 20-17 victory over Australia – having spent the first half of this year recovering from surgery for a long-standing neck and shoulder problem.

IRB SEVENS

IRB SEVENS
The Springbok Sevens team had to come back from a two-try deficit but edged Samoa 21-12 to advance from the top of Pool D for the playoffs of the IRB Emirates South African Sevens in George on Friday.

South Africa saw very little of the ball in the first half and Samoa got just reward for a patient build-up when speedster Etuati crossed for the first try of the match. The Springboks seemed rattled and some poor handling from the kickoff saw them spill a ball on their own tryline and Brian Lima was there to scoop up and fall over for the try.

Johan Pietersen stooped the rot and broke through the defence from the restart, running more than 60 metres to score under the uprights and get to within five points at halftime.

The second half saw a more composed effort by the hometeam and tries by Jaco van Schalkwyk and Wayne van Heerden went without reply.

The Springboks will face Argentina in the Cup quarterfinal tomorrow morning at 11:35. This match, along with all the other playoffs, will be broadcast live on SuperSport 1.
